How We Beat the Nintendo DS
There’s a shift in our house this first week of summer. A level of anxiety is down, with more reading, playing, and interacting. The calm is not because school is out, though everyone loves not rushing in the morning. We took my son’s Nintendo DS gaming system away. That’s the reason. He no longer lies around with a white box of flashing lights and moving objects dancing in the front of his face.
After much deliberation and whining last year, my husband purchased the DS for my son at Christmas. It was addiction at first sight. “Where is he?” I would ask, only to find my then 7 year old under the covers gaming. Getting him to stop playing was even harder than finding him. I used a timer, bribes, warnings, pats on the shoulder and ultimately threats and screaming. No use. We figured, prayed actually, that the novelty of the device would eventually wear off. But just like nicotine, the desire just grew stronger.
Was I alone in my DS loathing? One look around the playground and light banter with other moms told me no. The kids who snuck their gaming systems to school were like super glue to other boys. You could see them swarm and challenge, each vying to get a chance to play. I ruled out the DS during play dates, but when it was ominously quiet in my son’s room, there was no doubt the forbidden fruit won out.
